Haiti Earthquake Update
Les Cayes Tent City MFO Ambassador Trip

MFO residents traveled to Les Cayes on Saturday, September 2, and distributed staple supplies of rice, beans, dried fish, cooking oil, medicine, and clothing to people living temporarily in a tent city. It was a rewarding experience for nine of our older residents to help their fellow Haitians.

Many earthquake survivors lost everything and are now living in makeshift tents. Our residents saw first-hand the devastation and ruins of the Les Cayes city – where buildings have fallen, deep cracks have damaged roads making driving treacherous, and landscapes on the mountains have been altered from landslides.

Wearing yellow and white t-shirts touting “Reception Center of Maison Fortuné,” they shared time with earthquake survivors young and old, spreading goodwill and hope.

A Haitian proverb comes to mind:

“Sa je pa wé ké pa tounen”
translation: What the eye doesn’t see doesn’t move the heart.

The MFO Ambassadors saw the devastation in Les Cayes and how it impacted their fellow Haitians.
Thank you for helping us raise $5,000 for the Ambassador Trip!
Supplies were much appreciated by the earthquake survivors.
Our MFO resident’s servant hearts shone brightly!

Haiti Earthquake Update MFO Ambassadors to Les Cayes this weekend – THANK YOU!!!

Haiti Earthquake Update MFO Ambassadors to Les Cayes this weekend – THANK YOU!!!

Haiti Earthquake Update MFO Ambassadors to Les Cayes this weekend – THANK YOU!!!

Saturday 9.3.21 marks three weeks since the 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked “the Big South” – southwestern part of Haiti. Jean Louis and his team of student ambassadors will be embarking for Les Cayes, to distribute rice, beans, clothing, small toys, lots of smiles, and a truck-load of goodwill! Many thanks to the long list of ardent supporters near and far who helped us reach our $5,000 goal in less than a week.

I continue to see photos and reports of the earthquake damage. Not only have homes and businesses been destroyed, but mountainsides have fallen, landscapes altered and crops have been decimated. Concerns are growing for the already fragile economy. Staple supply prices are beginning to climb.

The trip on Saturday will teach invaluable lessons to our residents. They are sharing acts of human kindness with those who have lost everything. MFO residents will be distributing staple supplies of rice, beans, dried fish, water, medicine, clothing from the rental truck along with loads of goodwill! Their servant’s hearts are shining.

Again, thank you for supporting this internal mission trip.
Bondye Bon and Mesi Anpil from our brothers and sisters in Haiti!

MFO Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes…Take TWO (Earthquake Update)

MFO Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes…Take TWO (Earthquake Update)

MFO Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes…Take TWO (Earthquake Update)

One week after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit “the Big South” – southwestern part of Haiti, Jean Louis dispatched a team of eight ambassadors to Les Cayes, including five resident students. They took the campus transport van and loaded it full of supplies. While there, they distributed rice, beans, clothing, small toys and lots of smiles and goodwill! Jonel, our boy’s campus director, spoke with authorities to bolster awareness of the orphanage and offered condolences to the many individuals who had lost homes and family.

As the ambassadors arrived back in Hinche on Monday, Jean Louis said, “We didn’t really help that many, but did what we could.” You could hear the sadness in his voice as there are so many still waiting for help. I asked, “Do you know the story about the starfish?” He didn’t – and I’ll share it with him on our weekly call. “Well,” I said, “for those you helped, you have made a difference. However small it may seem, it is still something. And something is better than nothing.” He agreed. This is truly an amazing story. We constantly hear about aid coming from outside Haiti, but rarely do we hear about aid being dispatched from within. The MFO Ambassador trip to the earthquake-ravaged “Big South” was incredible – sharing something with those who lost everything – simply put: compassion for the fellow man.

We are so proud of our MFO team. Their pilgrimage of goodwill and compassion is one of many core values our resident students are learning…servant’s hearts are shining!!! AND it’s going to happen again! We are planning a second Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes on September 4. Trip #2 will have more impact as we will be renting a truck, police escort, and filling the truck with staple supplies to help those living in temporary tent cities. Follows is cost of supplies – and we will need LOTS of these supplies! Stock will be purchased in Hinche and Port au Prince:

20-pound bag of rice $22 (Goal of 50 count =$1,100)

20-pound bag of beans $35 (Goal of 50 count =$1,750)

10-pound container of cooking oil $54

Case of Spaghetti $12 (Goal of 50 count = $600)

Case of Herring dried fish (Goal of 25 count = $1,250

Set of 4 tarps $18

Case of Water $5

Case of aspirin $32

Case of soap $6

Case of detergent $18

Case of paper towels $7

We need your immediate help! In order to fill the truck, provide transportation and man-power to get items into the hands of those impacted by the earthquake,

we must raise $5,000 by Wednesday, September 1st!

The excess fund raised will go towards the Maison Fortune Orphanage mission.
