One room to start
Now an Entire Community
MFO was founded in 2000 by Lefort Jean Louis. He started with a one-room house and four orphans, then quickly expanded to 30. In 2002 as a newly formed Foundation, we purchased the property on Rue de Veronique, which formed the property we now refer to as the Boys Campus.
Raising future leaders
Today we serve 177 children in residence and another 222 day-students who attend our primary. Each day our all-Haitian staff serves over 700 meals and washes countless loads of laundry– all with love and care. Not all of our children are orphaned but they are identified as having little to no opportunity for education and often are from single-parent homes with no resources. Every child at the orphanage attends school and many also participate in sports, scouts, or other extra-curricular activities. When a child is referred, we work to find out the story of how they came to be with us – to make sure we are the best option to meet their needs. When they are accepted into our family, MFO becomes their legal guardian. We are not an adoption agency and the children stay within our care.
MFO is registered with the Haitian Authority which oversees Orphanages on the national level. The agency is called Institut du Bien-Etre Social et de Recherches, or IBESR. Our founder works with IBESR to assist with children who need our services.
