MFO Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes…Take TWO (Earthquake Update)

One week after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit “the Big South” – southwestern part of Haiti, Jean Louis dispatched a team of eight ambassadors to Les Cayes, including five resident students. They took the campus transport van and loaded it full of supplies. While there, they distributed rice, beans, clothing, small toys and lots of smiles and goodwill! Jonel, our boy’s campus director, spoke with authorities to bolster awareness of the orphanage and offered condolences to the many individuals who had lost homes and family.

As the ambassadors arrived back in Hinche on Monday, Jean Louis said, “We didn’t really help that many, but did what we could.” You could hear the sadness in his voice as there are so many still waiting for help. I asked, “Do you know the story about the starfish?” He didn’t – and I’ll share it with him on our weekly call. “Well,” I said, “for those you helped, you have made a difference. However small it may seem, it is still something. And something is better than nothing.” He agreed. This is truly an amazing story. We constantly hear about aid coming from outside Haiti, but rarely do we hear about aid being dispatched from within. The MFO Ambassador trip to the earthquake-ravaged “Big South” was incredible – sharing something with those who lost everything – simply put: compassion for the fellow man.

We are so proud of our MFO team. Their pilgrimage of goodwill and compassion is one of many core values our resident students are learning…servant’s hearts are shining!!! AND it’s going to happen again! We are planning a second Ambassador Pilgrimage to Les Cayes on September 4. Trip #2 will have more impact as we will be renting a truck, police escort, and filling the truck with staple supplies to help those living in temporary tent cities. Follows is cost of supplies – and we will need LOTS of these supplies! Stock will be purchased in Hinche and Port au Prince:

20-pound bag of rice $22 (Goal of 50 count =$1,100)

20-pound bag of beans $35 (Goal of 50 count =$1,750)

10-pound container of cooking oil $54

Case of Spaghetti $12 (Goal of 50 count = $600)

Case of Herring dried fish (Goal of 25 count = $1,250

Set of 4 tarps $18

Case of Water $5

Case of aspirin $32

Case of soap $6

Case of detergent $18

Case of paper towels $7

We need your immediate help! In order to fill the truck, provide transportation and man-power to get items into the hands of those impacted by the earthquake,

we must raise $5,000 by Wednesday, September 1st!

The excess fund raised will go towards the Maison Fortune Orphanage mission.

Haiti Earthquake Update

Since August 14th, there have been innumerous aftershocks following the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake which struck the south western coast of Haiti. At present, 2,189 lives have been lost with upwards of 12,268 injured and a staggering 30,000 Haitians have lost their homes from this catastrophe. Homes, businesses, schools and churches were reduced to rubble in the “Big South” – towns of Jeremie, Les Cayes and Petit Trou de Nippes.

While the tremors were felt in Hinche, the children and staff of Maison Fortuné Orphanage are safe. Maison Fortuné Orphanage is standing by to help children who may be displaced from this horrific natural disaster. Jean Louis, the Founder and Director of MFO has been in contact with IBERS – Haiti’s governing arm for orphans/orphanages and has shared that MFO is able to accept more children. With your continued support, we know we will be able to open our doors and assist children who may have been orphaned or separated from their families. Your gifts provide housing, food, clothing, medication and a solid education to children in Haiti.

Propane Stoves Refurbishment Project

On the campus of Maison Fortuné Orphanage, the day starts as most do, with breakfast, then a mid-day meal is served to all including our day students in the campus primary school, then followed by dinner. Children congregate and share time together over their meals – not unlike our own meal-time with family. Our cooking staff works non-stop on the weekdays serving up over 700 meals per day during the school year. In 2017, we made a huge leap from cooking over charcoal to cooking with propane. This effect has helped not only the environment but also made them work for our cooks more efficient.

The burning elements of these propane systems have seen a significant amount of use and are at the end of their service life. We are calling on you to help us with this immediate need – refurbishment of the cooking elements. The cost to replace four of these on the boy’s campus and three on the girl’s campus is $5,750. The photos below show the new cooking element from 2017 and the deteriorated cooking element today. With 168 residents and 222 days students, we need to have our kitchen working well at the start of the upcoming school year!

MFO Container Shipment Donations

MFO Container Shipment Donations

Dear friends,
After my last visit in late January to the Maison Fortuné Orphanage, Jean Louis urged
me to organize a container shipment of much needed supplies for delivery in early Fall –
at the start of the upcoming school year. The “Depot” – our campus storage facility
typically stores these supplies, but now it is completely depleted.
Caring for the nearly 200 children daily on our campuses means not only feeding and
housing them, but also clothing, providing personal hygiene items, medicine,
recreational support and back-to-school supplies.
Following is the list of much-needed supplies. Local pick up can be arranged in the
Hampton Roads area by September 16. Please contact me at the phone number
below. Items will be packed and transported to the shipping agent in Hollywood Florida.
From there, they will be loaded into a large shipping container and sent by boat to Cap
Haitien, where MFO staff will pick up and return to offload and fill our Depot!
This endeavor will require as many hands as possible to help make the task achievable.
If there are other groups whom you work with that might be willing to assist with this
undertaking, please let me know! I have boxes ready for delivery to collect these much-needed items. Boy and Girl Scouting troupes, church and school youth groups,
women’s and men’s clubs would all be excellent groups who could offer assistance. It
takes a village to help us raise the future leaders of Haiti. We are grateful that you are
part of our MFOF village!

Warmest regards,

Babs Zuhowski,

MY LIFE AND WHAT MFO MEANS TO ME — A LETTER FROM BLANC PROBUS

MY LIFE AND WHAT MFO MEANS TO ME — A LETTER FROM BLANC PROBUS

MY LIFE AND WHAT MFO MEANS TO ME — A LETTER FROM BLANC PROBUS

I am Blanc Probus.  I am in 9th grade at Saint Andre High School.  To let you know more about me I was born in a poor family.  By the grace of God, I got a chance to enter an Orphanage which is called MFO – Maison Fortune Orphanage. The Founder’s name is Lefort Jean Louis and he helps a lot of people in Haiti

The orphanage has two campuses and the girls and the boys help the leaders manage us.  Jean Louis is the main leader, and he allows us to sit out for movies during our vacation .He also won’t let us play soccer during the exam time – the entire time we must study.  Jean Louis encourages us to focus on school to be successful in school for life.

MFO helps us with many things like food, school, bed, shoes and clothes.  For me MFO is one of the best places in Haiti where children can have hope for a successful future. When you are sick and you feel like you have no energy just come visit us at MFO – we will fill you up with energy!

Jean Louis is proud of us and he endeavors to do his best in every way.  He shows us how to share the love.  With all my heart I love MFO and I ask God to protect us from every evil, to bless the staff of MFO, our sponsors, and to keep MFO alive! Thank you for spending your time to read my little story and the story of Maison Fortune Orphanage.
